ABOUT ERIC

I started drawing in my early teens, and like a lot of artists that work in the comics space, my first big influence was, How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way. I’ve always loved drawing but set it aside for a number of years after college. I got married, started a family, and although I continued to sketch here and there, my art table sat quiet for a long time.

About 15 years ago or so, I found a group of artists nearby that would get together for a ‘dine and draw’ night each month and I was introduced to the world of ‘sketch card’ art. I sent some sample cards in to a few companies and was contacted by Rittenhouse Archives to work on an Avengers trading card set, my first paid job drawing comic book characters I’d started sketching as a teen.

I couldn’t do all this without the love and support of my family. I have 4 children, 2 very fluffy dogs, and an amazing wife who continues to inspire, encourage, and support my artistic endeavors.

I’m a self-taught artist, which means I spend a whole lot of time making mistakes and working to improve. I can’t overstate how amazing it is to have learning tools today online that simply were not available when I started drawing.

eric’s process

Everything starts with an idea. For me, the story of the image is as important as the image itself. That story can start with an actual comic book script, like in my series Remnant, or it can be as simple as a sketch card for a trading card set.

Rough pencils to work out the story and design in my sketchbook

Details added and final linework completed on official card stock

Colored with markers, pencils, and paint to finish the card.

I tend to spend a lot of time in my sketchbook developing the story into an image until I have one that works.

Once I’m happy with the layout, it becomes about the details and then the colors.

This was my process for creating a page for my comic series, Remnant. From script to the finished printed page.
